College Draft
Rules

IN PLACE SINCE 1989

The first SFL College Draft was conducted in 1989 with the order being determined by order of finish the previous year. In 1992, the draft order took its present form as shown later in the rules. The College Draft was originally established to organize entry of new talent into the League. Now, it serves to allow teams that were unsuccessful the previous year to have a first chance at the incoming class of talent into the NFL and as a welcome for a new team to the League. Any player selected in the draft is given a temporary roster spot off of a team's 12-man roster until kickoff of the following season. This was established to allow extra incentive to holding and making a selection.

RULES OF THE COLLEGE DRAFT
DRAFT ORDER Draft order is determined by the following order depending on whether or not expansion teams exist in a given year:
  • Expansion Teams of New Owners: Select first. If more than one, a coin flip or draw will occur to determine order.
  • Best Finishing Teams of Existing Owners: Select in reverse order of finish.
  • SFL Bowl Runner-Up: Select according to reverse order of finish with the SFL Bowl Champion selecting last, SFL
  • SFL Bowl Champion: Select according to reverse order of finish with the SFL Bowl Champion selecting last, SFL
  • Expansion Teams of Existing Owners: Select according to reverse order of finish with the SFL Bowl Champion
  • Second Best Finishing Teams of Existing Owners
AVAILABLE PLAYERS Any quarterback, running back, wide receiver, tight end, or kicker selected in that year's NFL College Draft is eligible to be selected in the SFL College Draft.
TIME LIMITS The general rule given the short length of this draft is that a one hour time limit is in effect from the time that an owner has been notified it is their selection. Any different time limit may be generally enforced by the Commissioner with the general consent of a majority of owners.
END OF DRAFT At the end of the draft all eligible players not selected during the draft are available for signing at a time following the final selection of the College Draft that will be specified by the Commissioner after consultation of owners. At this time, the Commissioner may also impose a temporary limit of only one rookie signing per owner for a given time frame. Following this arrangement, teams are free to make roster moves as in normal accordance with League policy.
